A Little DSLR Help

I have an event tonight at a gallery. I want to take pictures of the art and snapshot of the people. The room has track lighting. I will probable be fairly close to the people in photos - 3-4 ft. What settings should I play with for this venue?

High ISO, tungsten WB....what else....(in the next 6 hours would be most helpful)

Thanks - I will post results tomorrow.

How to achieve great indoor photography results

aperture and shutter priority modes

Shutter speed

F-Stop

In Tv (Shutter Priority) the main dial behind the shutter controls your shutter speed.

In Av (Aperture Priority) the camera calculates the shutter speed based on the user designated aperture. You have no control of the shutter speed while in Av.

In M (Manual) the main dial controls the shutter speed. Pressing and holding the Av button on the back of the camera in conjunction with turning the main dial controls the aperture.

In P (Program) and A-DEP (Auto Depth) the camera controls both shutter speed and aperture. Only the ISO can be set by the user.

Passing down memories...

I just handed down my dollhouse to my Little Miss. My Dad and I built it - I spent many years playing with it and saving to buy the furniture. I had a very close friend in my childhood (Jennifer MacFarlene) this was our special project.

So many weekends going into Fredricton to buy furniture for our houses then having sleepovers. I miss this friend so much and had always hoped when we became adults we would always keep in touch. We were kindred spirits in every sense. Unfortunately, this dear friend died when she was 15/16 in a car accident in Ontario.

Every time I look at my house I remember her fondly, I wish I could let her mother and grandmother know how much she meant to me and that I will always remember those wonderful weekends together. If you know them - please pass on my love to them.

Little Miss thought they would have dinner out tonight...

Photo Trial One - Basic White Balance & ISO

As I prepared for my practice today - I realised I really should be cleaning my house instead of playing photographer. Anyway a quick tidy of my kitchen so I could show you the light in the room. Two windows please three overhead bulbs. We also have a picture window in the living room directly behind me...

I am going to use my tripod - for several reasons. The biggest reason - a baby and a 5 year old. There is no way I will get through this without interruptions (which I didn't). This will also help when doing longer shutter speeds.

Subject matter - Babe's new shoes (aren't they great!). Being a Mom 99% of my photos of are the kids - this will change as they grow and run from my camera.

1. Set the ISO - the higher the ISO number, the less light you need to make a picture.
2. Setting the White Balance (WB) tells the camera the type of light that is in the scene.
3. Program AE(P-mode)
This mode is fully automatic, but shiftable mode. You can change the exposure, shutter speed, aperture (so we are just getting our feet wet with a few minor white balance and ISO settings)

Now a final test - which ISO setting was the best...?
no specific order....take a guess...

Today I will switch from automatic to manual...

I have be postponing making the switch for too long now. Perhaps with pregnancy I didn't have the capacity for new information. So today is the day I make the big switch. I have a vague understanding of photography terms having worked as a designer for years and often helping a photographer for a shoot. Also, being immersed in photoshop for years helps too. But it is still a big leap for me....this is my thoughts for today...

Trial and Error...I have to see to learn. Reading my book is great - but until I try it myself it does not stick.

Know my Camera...how do they do it, quickly changing White balance, ISO etc...I have to practice so I can do this quickly like a magician.

Anyone else making this journey to manual? I will post some experiments on here...hopefully along with the settings I used. Any tips, critiques would be great!

I am using a Canon Rebel XTi basic 18-55mm lens.

Infomercial

In our house tv time is controlled...now that we have a new baby in the house Little Miss (age 5) tends to watch her morning CBC cartoons with Mommy in a dazed/sleepy state.

Last week as I went into her room to feed the baby I misread the clock, I thought it was 6:45 (twas only 5:45)...after her playing and talking for the better part of an hour I couldn't figure out why her Dad wasn't getting up for work (and getting her out of my hair for a bit!). I told her she could turn on the tv for cartoons... well of course it wasn't even 7am yet...so Little Miss has only an infomercial to watch. I saw that and asked her to come back to bed, but by this point she was wide awake and refused. It seemed like a harmless one and I checked that nothing stranger would be coming on. I said fine... why not for 15 minutes and I went to feed the baby.

That evening, after the wee ones were in bed, my husband asked me why Little Miss was talking to him at breakfast about hair straitening and curling! I laughed...I had forgotten about the infomercial that morning.

A week later it had left my mind, like most things these days. I was doing my hair (another rare accurance with a new baby) - straightening it, when Little Miss appeared in the doorway. "You KNOW you are burning your hair!" she said, I reassured her that I was not. Then she stated "I CAN see the steam coming off it!" in this matter of fact tone...the infomercial returns!

A Fresh Start

I am enjoying so many Mom's blogs or story and photos of the joys and trials of being a Mom. I thought I would make start my own blog featuring mostly photos from our day to day experiences.

I will start with a few photos of our preparations for my Daughter's 5th birthday celebration. A "Princess Ball", I bought all our party supplies when the Valentine's day items went on 70% off at Michaels. She made little bracelets for all her friends.
